Check What You Expect: The Voice of Your Truth or Your Saboteur.
One’s emotional life can be deeply affected by expectations.
My expectations can either lift me up or bring me down. Sound familiar? But vital to where I land is determining whose expectations am I allowing to influence me.
“Aren’t they all just mine?,” you ask. Well, yes and no!
Allow me to unpack what I mean:
I believe that the source of our expectations is either love or fear. Is that a little too ‘purple’ for you? How about positive or negative? Regardless, hang in there and follow me here.
When you think, believe, and internalize a positive expectation, I am convinced that a sensation of fulfillment, power, and wholeness follows. That is your Truth’s voice.
When you think, believe, and internalize a negative expectation, I am convinced that a sensation of lack, weakness, and shame follows. That is your Saboteur’s voice.
What’s a Saboteur?
Well, it’s that lovely voice inside your head that tells you’re less than, that you’re not good enough. Sure, it might keep you safe, but it certainly keeps you down and sad. Caught in a cycle of negative expectations can be incredibly painful let alone exhausting – for you and for others. The problem is when you are taking that ride you have bought a very convincing ticket sold to you by your Saboteur.
What to do? Try this:
*Consciously slow yourself down. Breathe.
*Articulate out loud or on paper your Expectation. To the best of your ability.
*Now, take an honest look at it and determine which Voice is speaking.
*Finally, CHOOSE to accept or reject the message.
Will this be easy? Probably not. You may find yourself instantly swept up in the emotional impact. Okay, fine.
BUT, the more you do this ‘pattern interrupt.’ the more you will be heading in the right direction of being at CHOICE.
And, in choice is your freedom.
Did this resonate? ‘d love to hear what the experience was like for you!
