My Definition of Commitment.
Do you commit with an all or nothing attitude? That is if you miss one day of action toward your goal/dream then all is lost? Or you immediately begin to think, “what’s wrong with me?” Well, perhaps it ain’t you at all (it isn’t!), but how you’ve defined the very word COMMIT.
Let’s take a look at the word, COMMIT-
:to obligate or pledge oneself /to carry into action deliberately
Okay. That’s pretty clear, yes?
Now, in looking at my own definition of the word, COMMIT, I found something hanging on to it like algae!
EXPECTATIONS!
I had plenty of expectations including the exact way I should commit and how I should feel and be while I commit. Sometimes our expectations can free the mind and heart or bind them. My expectations bound me inside and did not feel good! It was like I had added fertilizer for my negative self-judgments.
When I finally saw this plus that I thought to commit was a one and done decision, I knew that I needed to redefine the very word. I committed to redefining the word commitment! After much thought, I found it.
So here’s my NEW DEFINITION:
Commitment is the act of Re-Committing every moment.
What this allows is room to breathe and to constantly restart as needed without blaming yourself for being human! It keeps your commitment to pursuit alive and flexible.
So next time you commit to something or someone, see if keeping the above definition in mind makes showing up daily a little easier.
Did this resonate? I’d love to hear your thoughts…
