JUST CHUNK It!
Whenever I’d become overwhelmed doing my homework as a kid my father would give me the same advice, “Just chunk it!” Basically, “chunking it” means focusing on a small, but manageable part of the entire project.
Now, there is nothing new here. Yet, by giving myself permission to do just this and only this part in front of me, I freed myself not only from overwhelm, but from unhelpful negative imaginings of failure.
For JUST 15 MINUTES
I revamped my “chunking it” of my childhood in order to show up for myself and my creativity.
It happened as a result of my desire to practice my drums and rudiments. I loved drumming, but I really did everything to avoid practicing. So one day, I decided to “chunk it” and also time it. I took out my phone and set an alarm for 15 minutes.
Lo and behold, I was able to practice in a focused and productive manner for the entire time. And over the long term, my drumming got better. Just because I showed up for “15 minute chunk it.”
HOW To “CHUNK it”
*First, choose what project you’d like to work on creatively.
-Choose the project you’re either struggling with and/or the work you’ve been avoiding.
*Second, get a timer of some sort. Use what is easiest.
*Third, set your timer for 15 minutes.
-15 minutes is the minimal time you need to show up.
*Fourth, play with/work on your project for just 15 minutes only.
-You need only work for 15 minutes, but you may absolutely may work for longer.
*Fifth, when the alarm goes off, you are done!
-Congrats! You have just created a small yet powerful step towards accomplishing you creative project.
Understand, you have to chunk it long enough to see the positive results in your future creative ventures. But if you do this, I know you will see the growth and satisfaction you long for appearing in you work.
